This educational course has been created in conjunction with www.ypic.org.au; a health initiative for young women in the Caboolture region.

Introduction

The adolescent brain is defined as the pre-adult brain which, on average, is developed by aged 21 for women and 25 for men. Adolescent characteristics are particularly evident age 20 and under, which will be the primary age group for this online learning package.  We recognise that every person is individual and therefore have varying levels of maturity and personality. This is a general guide for Caboolture Hospital health professionals supporting young pregnant and parenting women and their families.

Content

This learning package contains four introductory learning modules with assessments.

  • Brain development throughout adolescence
  • Barriers to accessing healthcare
  • The effect of trauma
  • Creating tribes – peer support

 

This learning resource outlines your role as a health professional in supporting young pregnant and parenting women.  At the end of this learning resource you will be able to:

  • Have a basic understanding of adolescent brain development
  • Have a clearer understanding of normal adolescent behaviour and challenges
  • Gain an appreciation for the strengths of young pregnant and parenting women
  • Assess your own practice and explore practical ways to support young women in the healthcare setting
  • Recognise the barriers young people may have in accessing healthcare
  • Understand how childhood trauma affects brain development, future relationships and behaviour
  • Know the practice of ‘trauma informed care’ in the clinical setting
  • Appreciate the importance of social inclusion and peer support for young pregnant and parenting women

Instructor

Debbi Sutherland

Debbi Sutherland is a Clinical Midwife based in the Caboolture Young Mothers for Young Women Program (CYMYW). Debbi supports young pregnant and parenting women alongside family support workers from MICAH Projects in a community setting. Debbi has worked closely with the young women in their community to create this learning package, incorporating their ideas, design choices and content. Debbi supports young women aged 20 and under to access healthcare in creative and engaging ways whilst assisting families to gain trust in their healthcare system. This two-generational approach to supporting parents and their children is known to make a positive difference to families in the long term. Debbi has been a Registered Nurse for 23 years and Midwife for 10, working in variety of care models at Caboolture Hospital.
